Thursday, November 6th, 2008“Thanksgiving… be careful that you do not take the day, and leave out the gratitude.”
E. P. Powell
As Americans, we have so much to be thankful for. As believers in Christ, we have so much more to be thankful for.
It seems as though Thanksgiving gets so overlooked in our culture… I think it is lost somewhere between the ever-growing popularity of Halloween and the insane frenzy of Christmas. As a child, I never really looked forward to Thanksgiving the way I did Christmas (I’m sure it was all of those presents under the tree that I really looked forward to!) But as an adult, Thanksgiving has become so special to me. The gratitude that I feel toward God for all of the wonderful things He has done for us and in us is immeasurable. For all of our freedom – in every sense of the word. For an amazing husband and family. For the promises of the future. He deserves our gratitude every day, not just once a year, but it is nice to set aside a day just to count our blessings.
This year I am working on a “Thanksgiving Tree”. Basically a bare branch with paper leaves attached with autumn ribbons. A place to write out all of the many things we are so grateful for and then read them aloud around the dinner table. Just so we don’t get all caught up in the cooking and baking, the football and laughter, the memories and stories, and then… forget to thank the One who this day is really about.
I thought I would share some inspiration for Thanksgiving preparations and decorations. It comes up sooner than we think. Also, a couple of my favorite books are: “Thanksgiving: A Time to Remember” and “Give Thanks to the Lord” (a beautifully illustrated children’s book). Have fun planning this beautiful holiday… it’s one of my favorites. Blessings!
